844 Pakistan nationals granted Indian citizenship during 2005

New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) As many as 844 Pakistani nationals were granted Indian citizenship last year, the Lok Sabha was told today.

In a written reply, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said 185 nationals from Afghanistan, 41 from Bangladesh and 63 from Sri Lanka were also granted Indian citizenship during the period.

Replying to a specific query, Mr Jaiswal said during the last three years, 18 Chinese nationals were granted Indian citizenship.

Three nationals from Bhutan and two from Nepal were also granted Indian citizenship, the Minister added.

Foreign Educational Institutions: The Minister also informed the House that the government intended to bring legislation to regulate entry and operation of foreign institutions in higher education.
