UPA will weaken after Assembly polls: Naidu
Pondicherry, Mar 13 (UNI) BJP Vice President M Venkiah Naidu today exuded confidence that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) will weaken after the April/May elections to five Assemblies which would put a question mark on the stability of the ruling coalition at the Centre.
Addressing a press conference, Mr Naidu said the UPA experience was a ''failure'' with major political parties supporting it getting distanced from the government.
He cited the examples of the BSP, Samajwadi Party (SP), JD (S),TRS and MDMK which were distancing themselves from the government and said the UPA dispensation cannot run for long.
In this context, the only alternative at the national level was the BJP which would fight the coming elections on its own in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Kerala and Asom and have an alliance with the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.
Mr Naidu said the BJP decided to provide an alternative to the DMK-Congress Front and AIADMK Front in Tamil Nadu which had ''ruled and ruined'' the state.
In Pondicherry, the party will field its own candidates in all constituencies, excepting three or four seats where the party did not have much strength.
Mr Naidu said the BJP would highlight the weakening of the UPA, price rise, terrorism and the need for developing Pondicherry into a model state, during its election campaign here.
Admitting the party was not strong in the five Assemblies going to polls, Mr Naidu nevertheless added the BJP will try to improve its tally.
Referring to allegations against an Election Commissioner (EC), Mr Naidu said he should quit on his own or the President should dismiss him.
On the lone BJP legislator quitting the party and joining the AIADMK, he said the member might have switched allegiance for political reasons, but the people will give the verdict.
The state BJP had constituted five committees, including the election committee, which would start functioning from tomorrow.
The party will come out with an election manifesto for Pondicherry and the candidates would be selected from April 20, he said.
