CHONGKHAM (Arunachal), Mar 13 (UNI) Impressed by the socio-cultural similarities between the Thais of Thailnad and Tai-Khamptis inhabiting Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh, Thai Ambassador in India Chirasak Thanesnant today proposed academic and cultural exchange programmes between India and his country.

This would enhance bilateral cooperation covering tourism, trade and science, he said. In his inaugural address to the Buddha Mahotsava 2006 here today as the guest of honour, Thanesnant said both the communities are devout followers of Theravada sect of Buddhisim helping them to come closer because of their similar language, festivals, dresses, lifestyle etc.

As the younger generation is being swept away by modernity, the exchange programmes would strengthen the endeavours of both the countries in cementing the age-old relation further, he added. Endorsing the proposal, state Governor S K Singh suggested academic exchange programme for youth of 16-20 year age groups in institutions of higher learning in both the countries. This could be possible if both the governments are sincerely pursued, he added.

Pointing out that truth, brotherhood, compassion and non-violence are the essence of Buddhisim preached by Lord Buddha 2,500 years ago, Singh said that the same philosophy is the mantra today for globalisation in 21st century.

As modern marketing is also dependant upon the same principles, the governor called for an end to bandh and violence culture in the North Eastern region to market the high potential tourism sector of this region, particularly Arunachal, an oasis of peace in the disturbed region.
