Night long protest in Baramulla, old town observed strike

Baramulla, Mar 13 (UNI) Night-long protests and general strike paralysed life in the old town where police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse demonstrators protesting against the alleged atrocities by security forces.

Official sources said people took to the streets at 2300 hrs in the old town last night after some security personnel in civilian clothes entered a house and demanded food. The residents raised an alarm to invite the attention of the neighbours.

The demonstration continued throughout the night. The demonstrators, raising anti security forces and anti government slogans, demanded action against security personnel who had entered the house.

When a group of youths tried to march towards the national highway, police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse them.

Shops and business establishments in the old town remained closed and traffic was also off the roads in protest against the incident.

Later, senior army and police officials visited the area and assured the residents to inquire into the incident.
