Mysore, Mar 13 (UNI) The state-of-the-art DNA laboratory, set up here by the Anthropological Survey of India, will not only aid advanced research on human population in the country, but also support a variety of applications of DNA analysis, including paternity tests and forensic profiling.

The Lab, housed in the as is southern Regional Centre, 'Manav Bhavan,' is reckoned to be the best equipped molecular anthropology laboratory in the country.

The DNA analyser used in conducting paternity tests and forensic profiling had been specially acqured in from the US, while the institute is also equipped with high throughput automated analysis systems for DNA sequencing and fragment analysis, besides seven thermocyclers for DNA amplication and all the state-of-the-art ancillary equipment required for DNA extraction, typing sequencing, quantification and other types of analysis.

ASI Regional Head Suresh Patil told UNI today that DNA testing could help understand the biological make up of a human being. Though the Laboratory here is not as huge as the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) at Hyderabad, the new systems set up here would facilitate faster analysis of smaples. More than 90 samples could be analysed in three hours here, he said.

He said the Lab had the facility to analyse samples of human beings, plants and animals.

With a bench space for up to 25 researchers at a time working in the different facilities and a flexibility to accommodate seven to eight more researchers, the Laboratory was fully equipped to support almost all applications of DNA analysis such as high performance genotyping for micro satellite and single nucleotide polymorphism, mutation analysis and sequence formation for mutagenesis or clone construct confirmation studies.
