Kalan justifies alliance move with AIADMK
Chennai, Mar 13 (UNI) Tamil Nadu INTUC General Secretary G Kalan today justified the alliance he had struck with the ruling AIADMK along with President P L Subbaiah, which got them two seats.
Talking to newspersons here, Mr Kalan said since the INTUC, a powerful labour wing of the Congress party was being neglected by the Tamil Nadu Congress, the INTUC had no other alternative than forging an alliance with the ruling AIADMK.
Referring to yesterday's urgent General Council meeting of the Tamil Nadu branch of the INTUC, convenned by Tamil Nadu INTUC Vice-President N Nanjappan and the unanimous rejection of the alliance alleging that it was against its policies and rules, Mr Kalan said the meeting was illegal and pointed out that, as per the rules of the INTUC, only the President or the General Secretary had any right to convene such a meeting.
He said the INTUC has already initiated legal action against them.
Referring to the INTUC National President Dr G Sanjeeva Reddy's letter to the TNCC President Mr Krishnasamy disaowning the alliance forged with the ruling AIADMK, Mr Kalan said he has not received any letter from him.
He said he had already explained to Mr Reddy what compelled them to forge the alliance with the AIADMK, and also informed him that the leadership of the TNCC had been continuously isolating the INTUC besides not giving due respect to it.
He said the real General Council of the Tamil Nadu INTUC will be held here on March 24 to decide electioneering and the strategy to be adopted for the May 8 elections to the State Assembly.
A resolution disowning the alliance struck by Mr Kalan was adopted at an urgent General Body meeting of the state INTUC here yesterday.
The meeting also urged that Mr Subbaiah, Mr Kalan and others be stripped from all responsibilities of INTUC immediately.
