Jane Saville to be Australian flagbearer in Commonwealth Games

Melbourne, Mar 13 (UNI) Veteran race walker Jane Saville was today named flagbearer of the Australian contingent for the highly-anticipated Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games here on March 15.

The Manchester gold medallist was a popular choice for the honour, after her heartbreaking disqualification in the 20km Walk at the Sydney Olympics.

The decision to select Jane as the flagbearer is seen as recognition of her outstanding track and field record, the pinnacle of which was being crowned number one Female Race Walker in 2004.

Jane has a genuine chance for Commonwealth Games gold, having twice taken out top Commonwealth Games honours.

''I'm so proud to be representing Australia at my fourth Commonwealth Games,'' she said.

''Not many people get to carry their national flag in an opening ceremony. It's just great to be part of the team and to be given this honour,'' she said.

Swimmer Adam Pine, who will also be competing in his fourth Commonwealth Games, will recite the Athlete's Oath.

The Indian contingent at the opening ceremony will be led by Olympic silver medal winning shooter Rajyvardhan Singh Rathore.
