Melbourne, Mar 13 (UNI) Amidst the strains of national anthem ''Jana Gana Mana,'' the Indian tricolour was ceremonially hoisted at the Commonwealth Games Village at a impressive and colourful ceremony here tonight.

As the tricolour fluttred, Indian sportspersons, officials along with athletes and administrators from other countries lustily cheered, marking a special moment for the biggest ever country's contingent taking part in the Commonwealth Games.

All the Indian athletes, including badminton squad members and the Elite Athletes with disability, who arrived here this afternoon, watched the moment as the tricolour was unfurled.

Peter Haddaw, Mayor of the Games Village, H J Dora, Chef-de-Mission of the Indian contingent, Suresh Kalmadi and Randhir Singh, President and Secretary respectively of the Indian Olympic Association, were among those present at the ceremony.

In his very brief speech, Mr Dora hoped that the Indian athletes would give excellent display of sportsmen spirit and will bring laurels to the country.

Mr Kalmadi reminded the gathering that next edition of the Games would be held in Delhi and invited the athletes from other countries to come to Delhi in 2010.

''We will provide you the best-ever games'' Mr Kalmadi asserted.
