New Delhi, Mar 13 (UNI) Should there be a Censor Board for films? Are we mature enough as a nation to do away with a system of checks and balance? Two leading cinestars of yesteryear and now MPs in the Rajya Sabha have different views.

Jaya Bachchan(SP) and Shatrughan Sinha(BJP) differed on the issue in a debate in the House on the functioning of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry.

''We are adults and our film industry is also adult. Why control a creative activity, and please stop controls,'' Mrs Bachchan said.

Mr Sinha did not agree with Mrs Bachchan, whom she described as a family friend and a talented co-star.

''We may not have objection to a particular scene but our aunt or father or brother may have. Besides, we have to respect the sensibilities of 85 per cent people living in Bharat,'' Mr Sinha said. Tracing the evolution of Hindi films, he said: ''First, there were black and white films; then they were in colours and now they are turning into blue films.'' Widespread video and audio piracy was another issue which was highlighted by the two stars in their debate. Mrs Bachchan wanted the government to come out with firm and stringent laws to check the menace.

Mr Sinha went a step further. He said Bollywood film-makers feel quite hurt when someone pirate their films but they go about lifting music and films stories from other countries without any checks. ''What is right for Peter must be right for Paul,'' he remarked. He cited examples of many Hindi films and albums, which were pirated from Pakistan.

Mrs Bachchan expressed concern over the increasing trend of remixes, which was nothing but piracy of different songs and film shots.

However, on many ideas like improving Doordarshan and All India Radio, the two cinestars converged in their views.
