Dal lake shrinking due to encroachments
Jammu, Mar 13 (UNI) The famous Dal lake is shrinking due to encroachment which has been going on for the last 50 years, Jammu and Kashmir Housing and Urban Development Minister of State Tariq Hammed Karra told the Legislative Council today.
In a written reply to a query of Mr Sofi Ghulam Mohammad, MLC, the Minister said the depth of Dal lake was 45 feet 50 years before but it had reduced to an average depth of 4.5 feet (1.2 metres) only.
The surrounding area of the lake was 15,961 kanals in the fifties, which has also shrunk due to the encroachments, he said and added the water of the lake had also become dirty due to pollution.
