UP expecting peanut glut at 1.35 lakh metric tonnes this season

Lucknow, Mar 12 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh is expecting a bumper 1.35 lakh metric tonnes peanut output this kharif season.

In the 2004-05, UP had registered peanut production at 72,000 metric tonnes, official sources told UNI here today.

Last year, Jhansi division topped in the crop output at 28,200 metric tonnes, while Varanasi stood poorly registering 86 metric tonnes.

This fiscal, the agriculture department had targetted to bring 1.3 lakh hectares under peanut cultivation in the state, up from 85,065 hectares last year.

''The yield per hectare has also been pegged at 1,041 kgs, up from 816 kgs last year,'' sources informed.

The department is pinning hope on augmented yield this year following sustained efforts under the oilseeds production programme.

Meanwhile, agriculture experts have suggested implementation of advanced farm techniques and scientific cultivation to raise the production levels of peanut.
