Criminal escapes from police custody

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Mar 12 (UNI) A criminal Ramesh alias Sharad Shetty, escaped from the police custody at Igatpuri.

According to police, Shetty was lodged in Harsul jail here and was handed over to the city police on March nine, since he was to be to be presented before the metropolitan magistrate in Mumbai.

Three policemen, assitant sub-inspector B B Gaikwad, head constable M S Pawar and constable S S Arke of police headquarters (Aurangabad) took Shetty into their custody.

The incident occured yesterday, when they bus they boarded took a halt near a hotel at Igatpuri. The criminal told the policemen that he wanted to answer nature's call. While the policemen were getting down from the bus, he escaped.

A case of negligence was registered against the three policemen at Igatpuri police station .

Shetty hailing from Orissa is allegedly involved in a number of murders, extortion, dacoities and robberies and his escape is being considered as a great jolt to the police.

Later, taking serious note of the lapse by the policemen guarding him, the acting commissioner of police K G Patil, suspended the three policemen, police said.
