Sirsa, Mar 12 (UNI) Standing crops over several acres of land were submerged following a breach in the Sukhchain distributory near Nezadela Kalan village of the district.

The breach which occurred yesterday, could not be plugged even after more than 24 hours. The executive engineer of the irrigation department today visited the site and claimed that the breach would be plugged by evening.

He also denied the quantum of loss as claimed by the farmers, and said that crop in about 30 acres was affected.

The farmers of Nezadela Kalan and a few other neighbouring villages suffered heavy losses as water from the Sukhchain distributory flooded their fields. The reason of the breach is reported to be the increased flow of water in the canal.

The farmers alleged that the officials of the irrigation department had not taken timely and appropriate steps to clean the distributory that obstruct the flow of water leading to the breach.

On the other hand the irrigation department officials said that the breach was the result of increased water in-flow. The farmers have demanded compensation for the damaged crops.
