Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 11 (UNI) The Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) today stressed it will go for an alliance in the coming Assembly elections but retain its identity and the symbol alloted by the Election Commission (EC).

In a clear signal to the ruling United Democratic Front, the DIC(K) said it was not ready to wait for long and once the candidates list was finalised on March 20 at the party's convention, there will be no further discussions with any one.

''Certain UDF leaders met our leader K Karunakaran and held talks. We have told them we will go for any alliance keeping our identity and contest the elections only on the symbol the EC allots us,'' DIC(K) President K Muraleedharan told reporters here after the party's executive meeting.

The clarification comes in the wake of reports the Congress would ask the DIC (K) to contest the elections on the former's symbol.

Asked if there would be any change in its earlier stand to contest all 140 seats in the state due to discussions with the UDF, Mr Muraleedharan said it could be decided only after further talks.

When asked about Pradesh Congress Committee President Ramesh Chennithala's statement that those who recognised Ms Sonia Gandhi's leadership were welcome to the party, he firmly said Mr Karunakaran was their leader.

Mr Muraleedharan accused the UDF and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) of changing their stands.''It is not the DIC (K) which ditched the LDF. It is the LDF which changed its stand after the recent civic and the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha by-elections.'' He also said Vice President M A John was suspended from the primary membership of the party for openly criticising DIC (K) Mr John had rapped party supremo Karunakaran and Mr Muraleedharan for their efforts to strike ''unprincipled'' ties with the UDF for the ''sake of a few seats'' in the Assembly polls.

Meanwhile, Mr Chennithala, who had left for Delhi yesterday, was expected to brief Ms Gandhi on the latest developments, including the issue of bringing the DIC (K) into the UDF fold.
