Fake currency racket busted in Kashmir
Baramulla, Mar 11: Jammu and Kashmir police unearthed a fake currency racket in the frontier district of Kupwara and arrested a former militant in this connection, official sources said today (Mar 11, 2006).
They said acting on a tip off, a police party raided the house of Javid Ahmad Mir, a former militant, at village Bumhama, about 5 km from the town.
During the raid Javid was arrested red-handed while he was printing fake Indian and US currency.
Police seized Rs 1.18 lakh in the denomination of 100 and 500 notes besides US dollars.
The machines and other printing devices were also seized.
Sources said during the interrogation Javid had admitted that he was involved in the crime for the past several months.
Javid had reportedly disclosed names of other persons who helped him in the crime, sources added.
Police have in the past arrested more than 50 people involved in printing and circulating fake currency notes in the Kashmir Valley. A large sum of fake currency notes besides machinery were also seized during the past ten years.
