Doctors resume duty in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Mar 11: Most of the striking Resident Doctors in Maharashtra resumed their duty this morning (Mar 11, 2006) as medical services in most of the hospitals across the state returned to normalcy after a 12-day strike of the doctors was called-off yesterday.

The KEM (King Edward VII Memorial) hospital Dean Ms Nilima Kshrisagar said that many of the resident doctors have resumed their duty following the Maharashtra Government accepting their demands after marathon meeting with officials late last night.

Ms Kshrisagar said Government has given them 24 hours to join duty as some of the doctors might out of Mumbai.

Talking about the notices issued to doctors, she said they have been cancelled and the residents will be allowed to stay in their respective hostel rooms.

MARD (Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors) Joint Secretary Dr Yoganand Patil said some of the doctors had started attending emergency service since last night itself and others have joined the duty from 0800 hrs this morning.

He said government has assured to fill up vacant posts of security guards in the hospitals as early as possible and in the sensitive areas security personnels will be deployed on contract.

The state government has hiked their stipend from Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,500 and has also assured an increment of Rs 500 every year, he said.

A five--member committee comprising Maharashtra Medical Education Director W B Tayade, one nominee principal members Sadiq Patel, Head of department of Pharmacy at J J hospital Sadiq Patel and two MARD representatives has also been set up.

The commitee will submit a comprehensive report pertaining to other demands of the doctors including working hours, hygenic food and others, within two months to the government, Mr Patil added.
