Zaheera surrenders in Mumbai court; sent to jail

Mumbai, Mar 10 (UNI) Zaheera Sheikh, who was on Wednesday sentenced to one year imprisonment by the Supreme Court for flip-flopping as the prime witness in the Gujarat's Best Bakery case, surrendered before a special court here this evening.

Zaheera surrendered before Additional Sessions Judge Abhay Thipsay, who had presided over the re-trial of the Best Bakery case on the direction of the apex court and had convicted nine of the 17 accused on February 24, and was sent to judicial custody till Monday, pending hearing on her application.

She submitted an application to the court, requesting that she be not sent to Gujarat to undergo the imprisonment but instead kept in a Maharashtra jail.

Mr Thipsay, while sending her to judicial custody till March 13, directed the police to produce her in the court on Monday to decide on her application.

Besides handing over the one-year jail term, the Supreme Court had also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on her for making a false statement on oath before the apex court.
