Bellary, Mar 10 (UNI) Karnataka Labour Department Principal Secretary Vatsala Watsa and State Factories and Boilers Department K G Krishnappa today laid the foundation stone for the Centre for Safety and Fire services at the Jindal South West Steel Ltd, Vidyanagar works, Toranagallu.

Mr Vatsala also formally launched a post graduate diploma course in Industrial Safety and Fire, which was hitherto avaliable only in metros and a few other industrial cities.

The Centre would commence the course from this academic year, subject to clearance by the Board of Technical Education in Karnataka and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Board of Technical Education in Karnataka Director Prof K Basavaraj had visited the Centre on Feb 27 and agreed in principle to promote the one-year course.

The two-semester course would have eight subjects. While the subjects would be covered in eight months, the remaining four months would be used to provide extensive training to students in four places--an integrated steel plant, petrochemical industry, airport and fire brigade, besides visits to sensitive industries.

The JSW Steel Limited was commended for coming forward to provide infrastructural facilities for conducting the course. There were also plans to introduce the course simultaneously at the Bellary Government Polytechnic with a view to churn out more safety officers to cater to the increasing demand.
