New Delhi, Mar 10 ( UNI ) The CPI(M) Polit Bureau, currently in session here, today charged the UPA government with" being a party to the Iran nuclear issue going to the UN Security Council and its " deliberately spoiling" centuries-old relations with Iran.

CPI(M) Parliamentary Group leader in the Lok Sabha Basudeb Acharia raised the issue in Lok Sabha saying it was unfortunate that India toed the US line at the just concluded IAEA meeting in Vienna.

Besides, the country's independent foreign policy had been "compromised and exposed," the CPI(M) said adding that the US was still opposed to the Iran- Pakistan- India gas pipeline, " We have deliberately spoilt relations with Iran jeopardising much needed energy supplies.... All the sophistry indulged in that India wants the mater settled by dialogue is meaningless," the Left party said in a statement even as it began its three day deliberations to finalise its strategy for assembly polls, analyse the fall out of Iran issue on the world map and national and international political developments during the last three months.

Earlier Party Polit Bureau member and Rajya Sabha member Sitaram Yechury told newspersons at the AK Gopalan Bhawan where the deliberations are being held, that the Iran issue, having been reported to the UN Security Council would have" serious repercussions." The party said even the Prime Minsiter's statement to Parliament was notable for the omission that the issue should be settled within the framework of the IAEA. There was not a word that the matter not be referred to the Security Council.

The Left party opined that the IAEA Board meeting from March 6 to 8 had resulted in the Iran issue being shifted to the UN Security Council.

"With the report of the Director General being forwarded to the Council, the matter is now outside the ambit of the IAEA.

The US has made it clear that it expects a quick decision in the Security Council on how to proceed against Iran. It was instrumental in rejecting a Russian proposal which would have resolved the issue by allowing a small amount of enrichment of fuel for research purposes which have been under IAEA safeguards," the CPI(M) added.
