Udupi, Mar 9 (UNI) In a swift action, the police have arrested a woman for kidnapping a two-month-old baby from the Government Maternity Hospital in the heart of the city.

Police said Shakunthala from Mallampally, posing as pregnant, had come to the hospital yesterday and befriended a woman who was waiting with the baby for treatment. She had then taken the baby from the mother and fled the scene.

On a complaint from the mother, the police swung into action immediately and within hours found that Shankunthala had telephoned her mother from a nearby private clinic that she had delivered a baby and asked her to come with a car to return home.

Believing her story, Shakunthala's mother had come with a car to the clinic and taken her to Mallampally.

However, the police rushed to the spot, nabbed Shakunthala and returned the baby to its mother.

Police said Shakunthala had suffered a miscarriage last year.

However, she did not reveal it to her husband and mother and continued to pose as pregnant. When the time for delivery came, she had come here and abducted the baby.
