Mumbai, Mar 9 (UNI) Dr. R Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister, has lamented that although Indian business have come of age, the country still lags behind in innovation, research and development.

They have begun going global by acquiring foreign companies and setting up overseas ventures. They are now ably facing international competition, in terms of quality of their management and technical skills, products and low costs." He emphasised that India is still lagging behind in innovation, research and development.

India has excelled in highly complex sectors such as nuclear energy, space research and biotechnology, added Dr. Chidambaram. He also maintained that it was time that Indian industry, interacted with the academic world, and engaged in innovation and research and development. "The Union government has set up appropriate mechanism to facilitate such meaningful interaction,'' he said.

Bajaj said, "There would be no poverty and the country would be one among the top five countries in the world in terms of per-capita income." He also said that India and other developing countries should open their markets for the western products fully. He also called upon Indian businessmen to prepare themselves for international competition on the basis of high quality, best service, lowest price, and high integrity.

''Only our internal strength and quality from within can ensure our success on a long term basis. Foremost, we must believe in ourselves. Because, the multinational companies that we compete with are run by mortals like us, and not supermen'', he said.

Bajaj continued: ''Making money is exciting, but making a big difference even more so. Profit is an essential discipline to ensure that what one is doing is viable and sustainable, but it is not an end in itself. Sustainable businesses satisfy customers and create jobs that transform lives.

''Those that earn the right to lead have a responsibility to the future. There always has been and always will be a trade-off to be made between what is convenient in the short term and what is right for the long term. Leadership for me is choosing right and staying the course,'' he said.

Niraj Bajaj, Chairman, IMC's Technology&Quality Improvement Committee, said that the RBNQ awards were instituted in 1997 to commemorate Late Ramkrishna Bajaj, a Gandhian who propagated the principles of Trusteeship and Fair Trade Practices in the Indian business community.
