NBA condemns raising of height of Sardar Sarovar Dam

New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) The Narmada Bachao Andolan today condemned the decision of the Narmada Control Authority to raise the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam by 12 metres, which, they said, threatened the lives of 35000 families.

Criticising NCA's approval to raise the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam from 110.64 m to 121.92 m, the NBA said,''this has been done under great secrecy, without checking the ground level situation.'' , Describing it as a serious violation of the Narmada Tribunal Award and Supreme Court verdicts from 2000 to 2005, the NBA said, ''just two days ago, a letter written by Water Resources Minister S Soz to Mr L C Jain stated that all the authorities would assess the records, reports and take the necessary consultations before approving any raise in height. Two days later, all of that seems to have been done and clearance granted.'' UNI AR PK HT2100
