Kashmir University to have centre for Kashmir Studies
Srinagar, Mar 9: A centre for Kashmir Studies will be set up at the Kashmir University here next month to promote the language and the culture, an official spokesman said today (Mar 9, 2006).
The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen (retd) S K Sinha, who is also the Chancellor of the Kashmir University, here yesterday.
The Centre will have an autonomous character with financial assistance from the University Grants Commission (UGC), the spokesman said.
It will also be an academic forum for studying and debating various dimensions of Kashmir's cultural heritage, he added.
Besides organising seminars, workshops and lecturers, the Centre will encourage inter-disciplinary and inter-faith dialogue vis-a-vis issues of contemporary relevance.
The spokesman said the Centre will have an Advisory an Advisory Committee under the Vice Chancellor.
He said the Governor has shown keeness for making the Centre functional in the Kashmir University to facilitate exhaustive research on the Valley's rich culture and ethos.
Gen Sinha had been emphasising the need for reviving the traditional and glorious ethos of Kashmir that has withstood the test of times, the spokesman added.
He said the Governor discussed the issues pertaining to revival of 'Kashmiriyat' with experts in history and Central Asian studies.
