Hundreds of lambs sacrificed at temple fest
Tiruchirapalli, Mar 9: Hundreds of lambs were sacrificed to appease Goddess Kuzhumayai Amman on the occasion of 'Kutti Kudi' (tasting the blood of lambs) festival at Puthur in the city this morning (Mar 9, 2006).
The festival is celebrated every year for four days during the Tamil month of 'Maasi.' The lambs are sacrificed on the third day.
Hundreds of devotees queued up carrying the young animals for the sacrifice, a practice followed for centuries.
The temple priest 'Marulali' carried by two devotees on their shoulders accepted the 'offering' and tasted their blood.
The devotees believe the goddess accepts the offerings through the priest. Police made elaborate security arrangements for the festival.
