Helmets to become compulsory from Apr 1 in AP

Vijayawada, Mar 9: Krishna District Collector Naveen Mittal today (Mar 9, 2006) said the court order making helmets compulsory for two-wheeler riders in the city will be implemented strictly from April one.

Talking to UNI here, Mr Mittal said though the rule came into effect from today, he had asked Transport and Police Departments to counsel two-wheeler riders on wearing helmets for the next 20 days without imposing fines.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court had directed the helmet rule should be implemented in all the corporations in the state from today.

A police official said though the people of the city have enough time to purchase helmets, they should adhere to the rule.

They should also use seat belts and stop speaking on mobiles while driving.

Meanwhile, there is a heavy rush for buying helmets. A shopowner said they had limited stocks as of now and placed an order for 1,200 helmets from a company in Himachal Pradesh.
