Govt denies large scale corruption in Delhi's Traffic Dept
New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) The Union Home Ministry has denied that there is large scale corruption in Delhi's Traffic Department or that the traffic police causing harassment and coercing money from traffic operators for one reason or the other.
Minister of State for Home S Regupathy, however, told the Rajya Sabha that whenever complaints of irregularity, corruption or harassment were received by the Transport Department and Delhi Police, action was taken against such traffic police personnel.
In 2004, 626 complaints were received and action against 28 personnel was taken on 18 complaints while 608 complaints were not substantiated. In 2005, 721 complaints were received and action against nine personnel was taken on seven complaints while 714 complaints were not substantiated. This year so far 101 complaints had been received and all of them were unsubstantiated.
Among the measures taken to check corruption and prevent harassment were computerisation of issuance of licences and registration of vehicles, setting up a helpline (no 52400400) and receiving complaints by the department 'on-line'.
