Raipur, Mar 9 (UNI) The Chhattisgarh Government's scheme to provide free cows to tribal families living below poverty line could not achieve its target due to non-availability of adequate number of cows, Agriculture Minister Nankiram Kanwar said in the assembly today.

Replying to the debate on budget demands of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries departments, he said shortage of cows was the main reason for delay in implementation of the scheme.

Pointing out that the state government was serious in its commitment to provide a cow to each tribal family, the minister said the state government has decided to cancel the contract given for supply of cows, as the contractor had failed to ensure regular supply.

Mr Kanwar said bulls were being distributed in view of the demand from tribals. The government would fulfil its assurance of providing cows to tribal families in the next three years.

He added that arrangements were being made to ensure availability of fodder while distributing cows and bulls.
