'BPT-2504' variety will dominate market

Hyderabad, Mar 9 (UNI) Noted Agriculture scientist Dr Arjuna Reddy of the Acharya N G Ranga Agriculture University, today said the 'BPT-2504' variety would dominate the Indian rice market in the future.

Speaking in the plenary of an International Seminar on ''Bio Technology for Sustainable Agriculture and Agro Industry'' here, he said the variety had already captured a market share of 25 percent.

He said the research and ground-level testing on the variety that started in 2003 would be completed by the ensuing Khariff season.

Another scientist Dr Ramesh said the use of right markers played an important role in the selection of a rice variety.

He said scientists had used Molecular Markers for testing the 'Samba Masuri' variety. Research was also on to discover a cure for the Bacterial Leap Blight which was a threat to rice cultivation in the country.
