Amritsar, Mar 9 (UNI) A recruitment rally organised by the Assam Rifles at Khasa cantonment near here today turned unruly when a large number of candidates went on the rampage and damaged public property.

According to the police, the candidates from all over Punjab who had turned up for the rally got restless when they were asked to wait outside the rally site, as they were only permitted to enter the rally ground as per their serial number alloted to them.

As the entire procedure was time consuming, a number of candidates began to protest and accused the organisers of favourtism. They damaged a number of vehicles including government buses on the Amritsar-Wagah road.

The police, which was later called in to restore order, rounded up about a dozen candidates after registering a case against them under various sections of the IPC.

Meanwhile, an army spokesman said that the local army authorities had nothing to do with the recruitment rally, which was organised by the Assam Rifles.
