Zaheera never lied on oath before trial courts: Counsel
Vadodara, Mar 8: Zaheera Sheikh, the prime witness in the Best bakery case, has never lied on oath before the trial courts in Vadodara and Mumbai, her counsel Atul Mistry today said.
However, ''we have to accept the Supreme Court verdict'', Mr Mistry told UNI while reacting to a division bench's order sentencing Zaheera to one year imprisonment for contempt of court.
Mr Mistry said with the apex court finding Zaheera guilty of contempt of court in the case filed by social activist Teesta Setalvad, Zaheera is now left with no option but to move a mercy petition in the Supreme Court praying for reducing the sentence and the fine imposed on her.
Mr Mistry, who appeared for Zaheera and her family before the Supreme Court-appointed Gupta committee and Justice Nanavati-Shah Commission after playing a lead role in filing of an affidavit before the Vadodara collector against Teesta Setalvad in November, 2004, said he had absolutely no idea about the whereabouts of the Sheikh family.
A few months ago, he said, the family had informed about their proposed plan to visit their native village in Uttar Pradesh.
Thereafter, Zaheera had never contacted him.
