Women recruitment in police to touch national average: Reddy

Hyderabad, Mar 8 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Home Minister K Jana Reddy today anounced recruitment of women in state police services will touch the national average of 2.5 per cent.

Speaking at 'International Women's Day' celebrations organised by AP police Women Officers Association here, Mr Reddy felt the current figure of 1.6 per cent was very low and added women will be given priority during recruitment of 6,000 police constables and sub inspectors to equal the national average in the current year.

Stating the government was taking all possible steps to eliminate gender discrimination by providing economic assistance through several welfare programmes, he said the persisting problems faced by women will be resolved in the Police Department after studying the laws throughly.

Expressing concern over increasing male domination of women in society, the Minister called upon women's rights organisations to fight against physical and mental harrasement of women and achieve equality.
