Jabalpur, Mar 8 (UNI) The VHP today condemned the blasts in holy city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and accused the state government and the Centre of not exercising "alertness" despite tense atmosphere in that state.

''The tragic incident could have been avoided had the state and central governments exercised alertness for some days after the tense atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh,'' senior VHP leader Acharya Giriraj Kishore told UNI here.

He said the incident had proved that terrorism had spread its tentacles not just in Uttar Pradesh but across the country.

''The UPA Government had released information to the state governments recently that prominent Hindu temple movement leaders and other Hindu leaders are on the hit-list of terrorists,'' the Acharya said.

He accused the Centre of allowing terrorism to flourish in the country by abolishing POTA in the name of humanity. As a result, common Hindus were not secure now.

Acharya Giriraj alleged that political parties and leaders had got immersed in electoral politics that the country's security, dignity and protecting its culture had taken a backseat.
