Bangalore, Mar 8: The blasts in the temple town of Varanasi last night, which claimed over 20 lives, have come in for strong condemnation from people from various walks of life in Karnataka.

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy reiterated that such incidents should be condemned and said it was a sad act perpetrated by anti-social elements.

Appealing to the people to remain calm, he told newspersons in Mysore that a red alert had been sounded in the State in the wake of the blasts. Necessary protection had been given to places of worship and tourist spots, he added.

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan described it as an ''act of shame and cowardice'' and said those behind the act were ''enemies of humanity and religion.'' In a message here, he called upon the people to fight against the menace of terrorism unitedly and maintain peace and harmony at this hour of crisis.
