Protests on girl molestation continue in Manipur

Imphal, Mar 8 (UNI) Sit-in protests were organised in different parts of Manipur today against the alleged molestation and harassment of a girl in police custody.

The girl from Thoubal district, was apprehended for allegedly having an affair with a person involved in the killing of four policemen at Thoubal on February 20.

Violent agitations rocked the state after the girl on being released alleged that she was stripped, molested and beaten up badly in custody.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh had assured the Manipur assembly that actions would be taken against the police personnel if they were found guilty.

Meanwhile, the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) had decided to boycott all ministers and MLAs at any university function until the police personnel involved in the alleged molestation were brought to book.

The Working Committee of Apunba Lup (WCAL) had also decided to take up the issue and threatened violent stir if the allegedly involved policemen were not punished.

Officials said the district magistrate of Thoubal district would start taking statements about the case from tomorrow.
