Left condemn Varanasi blasts; ask people to stay united

New Delhi, Mar 8 (UNI) Expressing ''deep shock'' at the bomb blasts in the temple city of Varanasi, the Left parties today said all sections of the society must rebuff the heinous attempt to create communal tensions.

The CPI (M) Polit Bureau said it strongly condemns the blasts which killed 17 people and injured 100 more. The CPI Central Secretariat also condemned the blasts.

''The fact that the bomb blasts took place at a temple and the railway station in the city shows the diabolical motive behind this terrorist attack which is to create communal tensions and a backlash,'' the party said while coveying its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and sympathies to those injured.

Recognising the nature of this provocation, all sections of the people must rebuff this heinous attempt, it added.

Urging the Uttar Pradesh government to take all necessary measures to track down the culprits behind the blasts, the CPI (M) said the groups and networks who are responsible for the attacks must be identified and brought to book.

The party said it was ''unfortunate'' that the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party was resorting to ''low politics'' by attributing the terrorist outrage to so-called minority appeasement by the government and the secular parties.

''This is an exhibition of the type of communal politics which vitiates the atmosphere in the country,'' a statement by the Polit Bureau said while exhorting the people to stay united and counter terrorist violence.

The CPI said political parties must refrain from politicising the incident which may lead to communal polarisation of the people in Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere.

All sections of the people should maintain unity and harmony, not heeding to provocations from any kind of communal forces, it said while urging the Centre and the state government to pay adequate compensation to the victims and ensure proper medical treatment of the injured.
