Journalist, brother shot at; brother dies

Lucknow, Mar 8 (UNI) A journalist from Fatehpur Hanumant Singh was critically wounded while his brother died when they were shot at by three people -- two of them undertrials lodged in distrcit jail -- near Rakhspalpur village under Dhata area this morning.

Two assailants, under judicial custody lodged in Fatehpur jail, were beaten to death by the local residents. while of them one is still at large, police said.

Mr Singh, who is a stringer for UNI, and his brother had been rushed to Allahabad for treatment, but the latter died on the way.

The journalist was admitted to a private nursing home in a serious condition, District Magistrate of Fatehpur Girdhari Lal said.

The police said the incident took place when the victims were sitting at a brick kiln.

Three miscreants arrived at the spot along with two police constables and asked for some money. On denial, they opened fire at them wounding Hanumant and his brother Balwant seriously.

The assailants -- one of them identified as Maharaj Yadav, a history sheeter -- were out of jail on the pretext of undergoing treatment at SRN hospital, Allahabad.

Police is examining the role of the two constables, who were accompanying the culprits.

The postmortem of the brother of the scribe will be done at Allahabad. An FIR was being lodged in the matter, police informed.
