Decision on Jaya Bachchans disqualification on Kalam's return

Yangon, Mar 8 (UNI) The final decision by President A P J Abdul Kalam on disqualification of noted film actress and Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha member Jaya Bachchan will have to wait till he returns from two-nation tour of Myanmar and Mauritius on March 14.

Sources said Dr Kalam does not want to take a decsion on this controversuial issue in a hurry and is consulting a battery of legal and constitutional luminaries in this regard which has triggered a massive political controversy.

However, Dr Kalam told newspersons accompanying him that he was yet to take a decision on the Election Commissions recommendation.

I have received the report from the EC and I am still studying it, he said.

The EC has sent the report to the President seeking Ms Bachchan's disqualification for holding the post of Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Board.

Ms Bachchan, wife of megastar Amitabh Bachchan, has reportedly sent a letter to Dr Kalam urging him not to accept the ECs recommendation and also ask the Commission to give her a proper hearing and pass fresh orders.

In her letter, she pointed out the EC, while giving its recommendation, had not taken note of an important document with regard to her appointment as Chairperson of the UP Film Development Board, which is at present with the Allahabad High Court.

Asked about the Jessica Lall murder case, the President said he had received over two lakh e-mails in this connection following an appeal by NDTV.

I am going through them and some action will definitely follow, he added.
