BIS urges implementation of National Building Code 2005 by States

New Delhi, Mar 8 (UNI) Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) today dwelt on the need for a total review of the current building byelaws of the States and asked them for urgent implementation of the National Building Code of India (NBC) 2005.

Chiefs of town and country planning departments, development authorities and municipal commissioners of different States gathered here as a part of the implementation drive launched by BIS after it recently released the NBC 2005.

The Chief Guest, Dr H C Visvesvaraya, a renowned scientist, engineer and former Vice-Chancellor of University of Roorkee and Chairman of the BIS technical Committee responsible for the latest revision of NBC, emphasized upon the need for urgent implementation of NBC 2005 by revamping the concerned Act and particularly the local building byelaws of all the muncipal bodies in the country bring the same in line with NBC 2005.

He said a major part of the country is vulnerable to one or the other type of natural calamities such as earthquake, cyclone, flood, tsunami or landslides, and some areas are multi-disaster prone.

Dr Visvesvaraya strongly urged the local bodies to make full use of NBC 2005 for orderly development of the villages, towns and cities and to ensure that the colossal damage to life and property in the event of natural disasters was avoided.
