Use TPM as tool for gainging edge: SFL chief

Chennai, Mar 7 (UNI) Companies must use Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) as a sustainable tool and not as a strategy or a goal to enhance competitiveness, Sundram Fasteners Limited (SFL) Chairman and Managing Director Suresh Krishna said today.

Delivering the inaugural address at the two-day VI National Conference on TPM here organised by the CII, Mr Krishna said ''TPM is not a strategy, goal or vision. You have to use it as a tool. The more you use it, the more skilful and better you become.'' He also said organisations using TPM begin with a gusto but fail to sustain the momentum so crucial for its success.

Elaborating on SFL's commitment to TPM, he said it transcended the corporate level down to the operational level.

To enhance manufacturing competitiveness and be recognised as a premier global player, it was imperative to understand significance of TPM.

Mr Krishna said future lay in manufacturing in which China and India enjoyed cost arbitrage advantage over western countries.

To leverage on this, the two nations had to employ TPM.

Rather than focusing on bagging awards, it is essential for organisations to gain knowledge and use it for their development and TPM could help in this process.
