Uncertainty over Jaya's RS membership continues

New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) The uncertainty over the continuance of film star Jaya Bachchan as Rajya Sabha member continued today with President APJ Abdul Kalam still in consultation with constitutional experts on the Election Commission; recommendation to disqualify her for holding an office of profit.

''The President is consulting constitutional experts, but so far no decision has been taken,'' a Rashtrapati Spokesperson said here.

The complaint against Ms Bachchan had been made in October last year by Mr Madan Mohan, who had lost the election to the film star, seeking her disqualification for holding the post of Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Board.

The Spokesperson refused to confirm about the reported letter written to President kalam by Ms Bachchan urging him not to accept the EC recommendation.

Ms Bachchan in her letter is reported to have urged the President to ask the EC to give her proper hearing and pass fresh orders.

She said the Election Commission while giving its recommendation had not taken note of a very important document with regard to her appointment as Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Board, which is at present with the High Court.
