Landslide victory for LF in Tripura village committee elections

Agartala, Mar 7: The ruling Left Front swept the first ever Village Committee elections in Tripura, winning 503 out of 527 committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council.

All the 503 village committees were won by the CPI(M), the major partner of the Left Front.

Opposition Congress could manage 17 village committees, while the tribal based party Indegenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) could bag only seven.

Of the total 4165 seats, the CPI(M) has won most of the seats.

Earlier, the CPI (M) candidates were declared elected unopposed in 1063 seats.

Congratulating the people for his party's and the front's overwhelming success, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said the resounding victory had only increassed the party's and the front's responsibility for rapid development of the tribal areas as well as the state.

The CPI(M) state committee said in a statement that the huge victory was an indication of the positive verdict of the people in favour of peace, harmony, democracy and development.

The opposition Congress and the INPT alleged massive rigging by the CPI(M) in the village committee elections and said such trend was dangerous for the country's democracy.
