Eightyfive pc of rain water goes down the drain
New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) Despite huge amounts of money being spent on various schemes and projects for conservation, 85 per cent of the rain water received by the country annually goes to the sea unutilised.
The Government told the Rajya Sabha today that 1123 Billion Cubic Metres(BCM) out of the total of 4000 BCM annual precipitation was utilisable.
But out of this utilisable amount, only 629 BCM was being used for diverse purposes and the rest could be considered to be flowing down to sea, Minister for Water Resources Prof Saifuddin Soz told the House during the Question Hour.
He said there were various constraints--topological, hydrological and other in utilisation of the full precipitation.
