EC orders inquiry into poll violation
Guwahati, Mar 07 (UNI) The Election Commission(EC) today ordered an inquiry into the alleged violation of model code of conduct by the ruling Congress in Asom.
''A two-member special inquiry committee has arrived from New Delhi and from today it has started investigation into these alleged violation. It will take stern action,'' announced Chief Election Commissioner B B Tandon while addressing a press conference here.
The EC is winding up a two-day visit to the state after reviewing the poll preparedness by the state machinery as well as gauging the ground realities from various political parties.
''We have received largescale complaint of violation of code of conduct from political parties and we want to assure all that we are looking into each and every specific complaint. Strict action would be taken in each of the case, if found true,'' he said.
The CEC also sent a stern warning that heads would roll if any officer was found guilty of partisan behaviour or compromising his position to favour particular candidates, both intentionally and unintentionally.
All political parties met the EC and the opposition specifically raised the matter of back-dated appointments by the outgoing government as well as distribution of freebies to beneficiaries.
