Midnapore, Mar 7 (UNI) Director General of Police Subhash Awasthi today admitted lapses on the intelligence front and said the police would have to improve upon their intelligence network in dealing with Maoist threat in West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.

" I agree that we must improve upon our intelligence network," the DG said.

Mr Kartik Singh, a local CPI(M) leader, was shot dead at Lalgarh in West Midnapore district, party worker Madan Tudu was hacked to death at Barikul in Bankura district.

Last week the Maoists triggered a landmine blast at Bandwan in Purulia district killing five policemen.

Talking to newspersons he said some new steps are going to be taken up after two-days deliberation with the three SPs following the continuous killing of CPI(M) leaders and police personnel.

" I assure safety and security of not only political persons but also common people in the affected areas. We have sufficient modern weapons and other gadgets to deal with the Maoists but the only thing is that we have to improve our intelligent network," Mr Awasthi added.

The DG this morning discussed new strategies to contain Maoists with three District Superintendent of Police of Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia in Midnapore police line.

He was accompanied by IG(IB) Sadhan Mondal, IG(Western Range) Banibrata Basu and DIG(Midnapore Range) Gangeswar Singh.
