BJP seeks legal opinion if Sonia held office of profit as MP
New Delhi, Mar 7: Taking a cue from the Election Commission recommending disqualification of actress Jaya Bachchan from Rajya Sabha for holding an office of profit, the BJP today asked its legal experts if the same logic would hold good for Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
BJP Parliamentary Party spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra said the party felt that Ms Gandhi's position as the Chairperson of the National Advisory Council was tantamount to holding an office of profit.
''We are consulting legal experts and will proceed according to their advice,'' he told newspersons after the BJP Parliamentary Party meeting.
Yesterday the EC had concluded, on a complaint filed against Ms Bachchan, that her occupying the post of Chairperson of the UP Film Development Corporation amounted to holding an office of profit while an MP.
