SUCI releases candidates' list
Kolkata, Mar 6 (UNI) The Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) will field 125 candidates in the coming West Bengal Assembly election.
Announcing its candidates' list here today, SUCI state president Provash Ghosh said, '' We will contest 40 more seats time. In 2001 Assembly election, the party fielded 85 candidates. '' While former MLA Debaprasad Sarkar would contest from his own constituency Joynagar, convicted MLA Probod Purakayat of Kultali (SC), however, preferred not to fight owing to illness, he added.
He said the deposit money of Rs 10,000 would surely be no problem to bigger parties like the CPI(M), the Congress, the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party as these parties were ''financed'' by the corporate houses, but the smaller parties like the SUCI would definitely suffer.
He alleged that it was not the people's mandate, but the moneypower and musclepower, which would rule the roost in the election.
Mr Ghosh described as pre-planned, the Left Front Government's decision of banning wall graffiti, and accused the government of resorting to ''double standard'' by extending support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre and simultaneously holding ''mock demonstration against the Union Government's anti-people policies.'' Referring to the effort of forming a grand alliance between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress, he said both parties had given walkover to the ruling party by failing to cobble any tie-up.
Mr Ghosh, however, questioned the role of the main Opposition Trinamool Congress during the past five years, be it in the House or outside.
