Kolkata, Mar 5 (UNI) West Bengal Arthroplasty Society (WBAS) has introduced an advanced orthopaedic treatment called Rotating Platform Knee here today.

A patient forum was formed to create awareness about this knee replacement surgery. The forum would provide a platform for creating awareness about the growing prevalence of osteoarthritis amidst Kolkattans.

Speaking at the programme here today former skipper of the Indian cricket team Bishen Singh Bedi said that he had undergone this surgery.

Mr Bedi said, ''The knee problem made me immobile. Having spent my life in the nets, this was a setback for me. RP Knee has enabled me to play again and resume an active life.'' HOD (department of Orthopaedics) of Peerless Hospital &B K Roy Research Centre Dr Prabir Kumar Banerjee said, ''Knee problems are caused by severe osteoarthritis. Our first attempt is to treat the condition with painkillers and drugs. If that does not work, we operate and replace the damaged portions of the knee.'' An official release said RP Knee is unique to the extent that the plastic insert, rotates in the tibial tray spreading weight-bearing loads and reducing stress in the knee.

There are approximately 12,000 knee replacements performed in India every year.
