Modi asks women to oppose female foeticide

Ahmedabad, Mar 5 (UNI) Even as Gujarat Government contemplates to take legal action against doctors indulging in sex determination tests, Chief Minister Narendra Modi today urged women to oppose female foeticide.

Launching the year-long ''Save Girl Child'' campaign at a function here on the eve of International Women's Day, he asked pregnant women to just send a postcard to him, giving details of the doctors willing to perform the illegal test.

The government has already taken legal recourse against 60 such doctors, while cases have been filed in the court against 36.

He wondered how the ''would-be mothers allowed their wombs to be turned into graveyards of their unborn children.'' Mr Modi said the government is helpless in such cases, unless somebody lodged a complaint. He said that at least 4.50 lakh female foetus have been killed in Gujarat during the last decade.

Quoting sex ratio of different talukas in the state, he said, the girl child is more welcome among the 'backward' tribals than among 'modern' urbanites.
