Karunanidhi lauds UPA for classical language status to Tamil

Tiruchirapalli, Mar 5 (UNI) Lauding the UPA government for according classical language status to Tamil language, DMK President M Karunanidhi today dismissed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's claims that union ministers from Tamil Nadu had done nothing for the state.

Mr Karunanidhi, speaking at the party's ninth conference here, thanked Congress President Sonia Gandhi for appreciating his efforts in getting the status for the language and said he would cherish her letter in this regard.

''I will preserve this letter for 100s of years to enable my great grandchildren to read and cherish,'' he said.

The DMK chief said as many as 45 central schemes with a total outlay of Rs 26,657 crore were being implemented in the state.

The Rs 2437 crore Sethu Samudram project was being implemented and in the last eight months, 34,57,199 cubic metres of the canal have been dredged. Under the Golden Quadrangle 3233 km length of roads were being developed in Tamil Nadu with an investment of Rs 16,500 crore. The 'India One' scheme announced by Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran was also a major achievement, he pointed out.

Mr Karunanidhi also rejected Ms Jayalalithaa's claim of having made Tamil Nadu the 'number one' state in India.

Quoting from a statistical handbook of the Tamil Nadu government, he claimed that food production was much higher during the erstwhile DMK government.

''Is this the way she is trying to make the state number one'', he asked.

Stating that Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) had the huge task of securing victory in the May 8 election.

''I am sure every drop of your sweat and breath would bring us victory'', Mr Karunanidhi said.

Leaders of other front partners, including TNCC President M Krishnaswamy, PMK founder-President Dr S Ramadoss, CPI(M) Tamil Nadu unit Secretary N Varadarajan, CPI Tamil Nadu unit Secretary D Pandyan also spoke on the need for throwing out the ''anti-people, anti-democratic and the autocratic Jayalalithaa government.'' They, however, refrained from making any direct attack on Mr Vaiko for quitting the DPA.
