V P Singh protests Wheat import
New Delhi, Mar 4 (UNI) Former Prime Minister V P Singh today challenged the Government's decision to import five lakh tonnes of wheat from Australia, saying the produce will reach India when Indian farmers would have already flooded the market with their bumper rabi crop.
Addressing a meeting of workers of the Shiromani Akali Dal and Kisan Morcha here, he said the Government was importing wheat at a cost of Rs 950 per tonne even as farmers here were to receive a minimum support price of Rs 650 per tonne for the produce.
Reminding the Government of the mass protests of 1992 when a similar decision was taken, he said the farmers would stage a massive rally in the capital against the Government move.
